Dr. Shenita Etwaroo: A Story of Grace, Perseverance, and Redemption
Throughout her life, Dr. Shenita Etwaroo has walked through some of life’s darkest valleys; facing near-death experiences, relentless adversity and traumatic abuse. Yet, through it all, she has emerged stronger, shining as a living testimony of God’s unfailing grace and mercy. She survived against all odds, rising above tragedy and pain to become a voice for the voiceless and a beacon of light for the hopeless.
Shenita’s journey is not merely one of endurance, but of divine transformation. Guided by her unwavering faith in Jesus Christ, she turned every trial into a testimony of victory and every scar into a symbol of strength. Honoring her Lord and Saviour, her beloved late rabbit Neo and animal companions, and her loving mother Shirley Savitree, Shenita continues to live out her purpose. Her calling is to bring healing, compassion, and awareness to the world, especially to those who have suffered abuse, injustice, and oppression.
Even at a young age, Shenita felt immense sympathy for the pain of others. At the age of three, she provided food and drinking water to the homeless and adopted stray animals, which highlighted her innate kindness and empathy. This same empathy would go on to become the driving force behind her advocacy for animal rights and human rights, mental health awareness, and resistance to all forms of cruelty and unfairness.
Her love affair with her cherished bunny Neon, whom she affectionately referred to as Neo, marked the beginning of a new chapter in her life. Neo wasn’t any ordinary pet — she was family, the loyal friend who provided unconditional love and joy in Shenita’s darkest moments. When Shenita endured multiple near-death experiences, the prospect of leaving Neo all alone and abandoned gave her the strength to fight for her life. That love, simple and sublime, rekindled her desire to live. Neo, with her soft approach, inadvertently saved Shenita’s life and motivated her crusade to be the voice for all the voices that cannot be heard.
Having survived years of emotional, physical, and psychological abuse at the hands of the narcissistic psychopaths she writes about, Shenita could have become ruined by anger and hopelessness. But she made the choice to heal. She picked up the tool of writing therapy and used her pen both as sword and shield. In writing, she discovered the means to articulate her hurt, work through her trauma, and finally, publish her faith-inspired account of restoration and recovery. What began with her words became also a sanctuary for herself and for all the others passing through similar night.
Now, Shenita is not just a survivor but a victor. She still experiences health issues arising from the trauma in the past, but her trust in God, the tender care of her mom Shirley, and the love of her cherished pets — Neo, and her darling cats Pippa and Ella — have kept her going through all the storms. These precious lives have been an immense emotional strength for her, keeping her daily focused on the love of God expressed through His creation.
Academically, Shenita is a highly accomplished and highly educated woman. She is the humble recipient of Bachelors, Masters, Doctorate degrees and many certifications in such areas as biblical studies, philosophy, education, healthcare, technology, and business. With extensive knowledge, coupled with life experience, she is able to write and lecture with intellect and with empathy. She has lectured and inspired students. She has authored an array of compositions, ranging from poetry, fiction to reflective essays and advocacy compositions. Every composition contains the message of hope, healing, faith, and perseverance.
Her professional pursuits are deeply interwoven with her spiritual mission. Through her ministry and advocacy, Shenita continues to stand for truth, justice, and compassion. Whether she is speaking on behalf of abused animals, supporting victims of domestic violence, or mentoring those struggling with trauma and mental health challenges, she embodies the heart of Christ in her service. She believes that the written word, inspired by divine truth, has the power to heal, uplift, and transform lives.
Being a devout Christian, Shenita’s trust in Jesus Christ is the cornerstone on which the rest of her life is established. When she felt most helpless — broken, battered, and hopeless — God proved to be her refuge and strength. Prayers, grace, and unwavering faith in the promises He made helped her muster the courage to stand up again. Psalm 27:1 is one of the Bible verses that Shenita likes to go back to again and again. The scripture summarizes the transition she made from darkness into the divine light.
Her activism is the outworking of that faith. Shenita tirelessly advocates for the oppressed both with and without four or two legs. Veganism is more than a diet with her; it’s an issue of moral and spiritual conviction based on what she believes about kindness, responsibility, and the sanctity of all life. In her writing, art, and teaching, she challenges others to love and live out empathy, demonstrating that caring for creation is an act of worship toward the One who made it all.
Despite having endured unimaginable barbarism at the hands of human beings, Shenita cannot allow the negativity of others to dull her glow. She is strong in forgiveness, powerful in mercy, and hopeful in the Lord alone. She writes again and again for the hurting, the abused survivor, the victim of torment, the depressed struggler, the unseen or unloved one, reminding them in her testimony that though all may seem lost, the grace of God outweighs all suffering.
When at home and not in the process of writing or teaching, Shenita actually serves in the community — siding with organizations which assist the poor, the abused, and the abandoned. She finds joy in vegan cooking, with time spent with her animal friends, and in appreciating the beauty of God in nature. Every single moment in her life is an expression of gratitude for every breath, every sunrise, and every second chance offered by the mercy of God.
To this day, thousands worldwide continue to be inspired by the story of Shenita. She remains a living testament to overcoming evil with good through her resilience and courage. She neither views herself as having been victimized in the past but rather as an instrument of the purpose of God with the pain used to heal and create awareness in people.
Here is her simple yet powerful message: Regardless of how severe the wound, how black the night, or how severe the betrayal, there is always hope in the power of faith in God. Shenita believes that any human being, regardless of their history or affliction, can be resurrected through the redemptive love of Christ.
Literally in her own words, “I survived against all odds, not by my strength, but by the grace of God. And indeed, with such grace, Dr. Shenita Etwaroo continues to fulfil her mandate: to improve this world for all of humankind and all of God’s creatures. She is living testament to the fact that tragedy can be transformed into victory with faith, love, and resolve and suffering can be transformed into service.
Christian Faith
For me, being a Christian is all about true love. The Gospel of John instructs us, “Dear Friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” I believe that first we need to love ourselves, even when we are told that we do not deserve love. Then we need to love others, especially those who have not been treated with love. And of course, we need to love Jesus. Love for Jesus can be the foundation for living a good life, a life full of compassion and joy.Loving Jesus is where I believe a Christian life starts, because that love spreads all around, to people, animals, and the world.
Animal Rights
During my life so far, animals have brought me joy and comfort when I thought that I would never find happiness. My bunny Neon taught me so much about unconditional love. This experience showed me that animals have souls deserving of love just as much as humans, and they can be some of the purest examples of God’s love on Earth. I believe we can all show animals the compassion and love they deserve by choosing products that are fur-free and cruelty-free and by eating a vegan diet. Even people who aren’t prepared to commit to a vegan lifestyle can make thoughtful everyday choices that reduce needless cruelty against animals.
Human Rights
I have myself been a victim of abuse, so I know how hopeless life can seem to those in dark situations. However, I also know how much of a difference a small ray of light can make. My goal in life now is to shine that ray of light onto as many people in need as possible. As an advocate for human rights, I aim to raise awareness and help others who are suffering. From volunteering for organizations, to simply looking out for a neighbour or friend, we can all make a difference in helping others.Human rights of freedom and safety belong to each of us, and we all have a responsibility to support people who are the most vulnerable.
