Revelation 17:5
“And
the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and
precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of
abominations and filthiness of her fornication:
“And
upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY,
BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.”
America: Mystery Babylon the Great
From ancient times, the Bible has prophesied a
final empire—a radiance of untold riches and military strength—but an empire
characterized by spiritual corruption and deceitfulness as well. A question
often debated by prophecy researchers is the meaning of “Mystery Babylon The
Great” and the “prostitute” mentioned in Rev 17. Some prophecy researchers
believe this represents a present-day superpower; a land once a light unto the
world, having drifted away from God's righteousness. In recent times, The United
States of America have revealed itself to be what was spoken about in the
scriptures
The Whore of Revelation
The Whore of Revelation is a symbolic figure – it
is a mighty woman, typifying an institution of idolatry, spiritual adultery,
and world-wide seduction. She is seated on a scarlet-colored beast with seven
heads and ten horns, demonstrating her involvement with the powers and kings of
this earth. The scripture says that this woman is “that great city, which
reigneth over the kings of the earth” (Revelation 17:18).
Believers have seen various patterns related to
this spirit through history – Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece,
Rome, and even the oppressive government of Nazi Germany, each oppressing God’s
truth and God’s people, and making up a series of what are referred to as the
seven fallen satanic kingdoms mentioned in prophetic studies.
But the Word of God talks about an eighth kingdom, a final kingdom that carries all the arrogance, immorality, and rebellion of the preceding ones. “And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition” – this is found in Revelation 17:11. The final power, an end-times power, will become the throne of Antichrist – a kingdom that is prosperity on the surface but full of abominations inside. The fourth and terrifying beast of Daniel.
The Eighth Kingdom and the Spirit
of Babylon
Through all the ages, Babylon has represented a
rebellion against God Himself, starting with the tower mentioned in Genesis 11,
as man attempted to make a name for himself independent of God. The Babylon of
the prophecy in Revelation represents far more than just a city, as it is the
spirit of worldliness, self-exaltation, involving politics, commerce, and false
religion.
Contemporary interpreters perceive the United
States of America as a system just like ancient Babylon – a world of luxury,
pride, and spiritual blindness. It is a world that is abundantly blessed, yet
one that fosters corruption, violence, and immorality. It deals with all
nations, spreading both its materialism and spiritualism all over the world.
The Cup of Abominations
John recognized that the woman was holding a cup
that was “full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication.” The cup
symbolizes a tempting mixture of pleasure and deceit – the attractions of
materialism, entertainment, and comfort that are intoxicating the world. The
cries of the prophets against this sort of deception are “For all nations have
drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication” (Rev 18:3).
The revelation is not just a call to a land, but
it is a revelation of the spiritual condition of man, a generation that exalts
success, technology, and pleasure even above the fear of the Lord. Like
Babylon, this system says, “I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no
sorrow” (Rev 18:7, KJV). Destruction comes quickly, nonetheless.
The Judgment of Babylon
“Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen” says an
angel in Revelation 18. Babylon's crimes are so grievous that they “have
reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.” Babylon is
destroyed suddenly, as “in an hour” the burning fire devours all that is
valuable: “riches, singing, merchandising, and powers” all vanish at once.
It is far more than an economic downturn, as the
United States is experiencing the ruin of a global system that has rejected the
holiness of God. A prophecy tells us that “the merchants of the earth will
weep, when they see the smoke of that Great City descending, and calling out,
‘Alas, alas, the great city, Babylon, that mighty city! For in one hour is thy
judgment come.’ The merchandisers will weep, as they realize that ‘no man will
buy their merchandise anymore.’ The “luxuries of the proud” will be reduced
A Call to God’s People
Within this vision of destruction, mercy exists
as well. The voice crying out from heaven says:
“Come out of her, my people, that ye be not
partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues” (Revelation 18:4
KJV).
It is the calling of God to his followers, a
calling to depart out of the corruption of the world, away from the idols of a
lustful, greedy, and deceitful mind, and to dwell as strangers even in this
world, as citizens of heaven. The Lord wills not the death of the wicked, but
that all should come to repentance. The nations may be wrath, and the kings are
gathered against the Lamb, but the Scripture says, “The Lamb shall overcome
them: for He is Lord of lords, and King of kings” (Revelation 17:14, KJV).
Open up your heart and follow God’s leading to
come out from the darkness which America has become. Don’t be swayed by the
false promises of joy, it’s only but fleeting. Heed the true call of God and
let your life be fulfilled unto his will
Conclusion: The Final Warning
The prophecy concerning ‘Mystery Babylon the
Great’ is given, not to provoke fear, but rather to open one’s mind to
discernment. Every believer is exhorted to ‘Watch, and pray, and be unspotted
from the world.’ Whatever may be the position regarding the various nations,
the ‘spirit of Babylon’ is already operating, enticing hearts away from God by
‘pride, fornication, and the lust of money.’
